Dribbling is one of the most basic skills necessary to the game of basketball. It's vital to moving the ball up and down the court and maintaining possession of the ball. When working with beginning players, simple drills and games help quickly develop dribbling skills.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start the session with stretching exercises to warm the muscles and prevent injury. Add 2 to 3 minutes of light running to the warm-up routine.

  2. Step 2

Begin with easy ball handling exercises. Direct each player to get a ball from the ball cage. Assemble the players in a circle around the coach.

  3. Step 3

Start with a simple right-hand dribble at about waist level. Remind the players to keep knees bent, back straight and to use the opposite arm to protect the ball. Stress the importance of keeping the eyes up to watch the court, teammates and opponents.

  4. Step 4

Switch to the left hand and repeat the exercise. Alternating right and left hands, dribble down low and up high. Make sure players dribble with fingertips and not with the palm to allow for more control of the ball.

  5. Step 5

Teach the players to cross-over dribble, which allows for a change in direction when moving the ball down the court. Stress the importance of "crossing low" for maximum protection of the ball against a defender.

  6. Step 6

Move to more advanced ball handling like between the legs, behind the back and spin dribble. Encourage players to practice daily to increase control and proficiency.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the door of the ball cage is securely latched to prevent injury.
