How to Choose a Veterinarian for Your Pet Rabbit

Rabbits are growing in popularity as household pets. A veterinarian who treats rabbits has a different practice than one limited to dogs or cats. Animals, like people require ongoing and routine health care. Medical care for pets is just as crucial as feeding, exercising and providing a loving home.

  1. Step 1

    Call around and ask if the veterinarian sees "exotics," like rabbits. Be mindful of complete responsibility for the rabbit's well being. Ask a lot of questions of the veterinarian and be diligent about tending to the rabbit's health maintenance.

    Select a veterinarian that insists on a check within the first week for the initial exam and stool check. Look for a physician who makes sure that the rabbit is healthy and has no intestinal parasites. She also provides the appropriate de-wormer if parasites are a problem.

  3. Step 3

    Feel confident in the veterinarian that requires appointments every six months once the rabbit is five years old.   4. Step 4

    Take note of the veterinarian that checks for malocclusion, a problem that can lead to overgrown teeth as well as a variety of other dental issues. A reputable animal doctor has the rabbit's teeth checked as they grown constantly throughout her entire life and can lead to dental disease.

  5. Step 5

    Return to the veterinarian of choice for annual for the rabbit's check-up. Choose to keep the animal doctor that has the bunny checked for disease that may be in progress.
