One of the most important aspects of belly dancing is the costume that you choose to wear. Your belly dancing costume not only reflects the exotic nature of the dance, but also gives you the ability to move without restriction. You can choose as simple or elaborate of a costume as you wish.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a feel for what others plan to wear. If you're taking a belly dancing class, you can ask the instructor for advice on the appropriate attire. She can tell you if the class is casual or if dancers wear elaborate costumes.

  2. Step 2

Pick out your top first. You want a top that is both form fitting and comfortable. You probably want to wear something like a unitard, leotard or tank top.

  3. Step 3

Choose your hip scarf. You should enjoy picking out your belly dancing hip scarf. You can find these scarves decorated with elaborate beading and coins. As you move, the scarf makes sounds. If you want a lightweight hip scarf, choose a scarf made from chiffon.

  4. Step 4

Decide on the bottoms that you wish to dance in. Some dancers choose form fitting pants, while others opt for belly dancing skirts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you select a belly dancing costume, you can enhance your costume by wearing gypsy style jewelry.
