People have enjoyed ballroom dancing for centuries. Although many couples ballroom dance for enjoyment at social functions, you can also use the steps that you learn in competition. When you first start ballroom dancing, you need to master some of the most basic steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Start with the walking step. One of the first steps taught in ballroom dancing is the walking step. You use this step to move towards and away from a partner while on the dance floor.
Step2
Understand the two different styles. You can perform the walking step in either the ballroom style or the Latin style. In the ballroom style you lead with your heel. In the Latin style you lead with your toe.
Step3
Perform the move forwards and backwards. In both the ballroom and Latin styles, you head backwards with your toe first.
Step4
Glide your feet across the floor. You want to take graceful strides, so avoid keeping your legs rigid.
Step5
Continue practicing until you master the move. At first, you may wish to watch your feet in order to get the move down. With time, you should be able to complete the move without checking it over.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to equally divide your body's weight while completing the walking step. By doing this, you maintain your balance and grace during the dance.
  • Before you perform the walking step, you should get into the starting position. Stand upright with your feet together and arms at the sides.
