The bagpipe is a woodwind instrument and as such the reed is critical to proper piping. The reeds used in the practice chanter are different than those used in the great highland pipe. Determining the correct reed to use takes just a few steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Use a double reed for the highland bagpipe.
Step2
Examine the wooden reed of the great highland bagpipe. The wooden reed is designed to produce full, loud tones.
Step3
Determine if you want a soft, medium or hard wooden reed. Most beginners do best with a soft reed.
Step4
Purchase the correct size reed for your bagpipe. The highland bagpipe takes the standard size. Reeds for practice pipes and children's pipes are smaller.
Step5
Select a plastic reed for your practice chanter. The plastic reed gives the practice chanter a quieter sound.
