How to Hit a Short Backhand in Badminton

Hitting a short backhand serve is an effective way to play aggressive badminton. It puts the shuttlecock in your opponent's forecourt, forcing her to run to return it. At the same time, it allows you to move up and get ready to smash a weak return. It's a quick way to get an advantage and take control of the game.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your racket side foot forward. If you hold the racket in your right hand, your right foot is forward. Put your weight on your front foot as you begin the serve. Raise the heel of your back foot to help push your weight forward.

  2. Step 2

Hold your racket high up on the grip with your thumb on the back of the grip. The only motion you need for this stroke is the push of your thumb and a little wrist action.

  3. Step 3

Pinch the shuttlecock by the feathers between your thumb and index finger. Hold it out in front of the center of the racket. The center, called the "sweet spot," is the area that gives you the cleanest shot and the most control of the bird. Keep the shuttlecock out about 18 inches from your body to give you room to swing the racket.

  4. Step 4

Serve the shuttlecock by taking a quick back swing with your wrist and then a short stroke forward and up. Thumb control is critical here. The thumb pushes the racket forward in a flicking motion with just a little flexing of the wrist.
