Receiving the drop shot in badminton means getting to the forecourt quickly to return a short volley from your opponent. Your opponent's strategy with this shot is to get you off balance and drop the shuttlecock just over your side of the net before you can react.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start in the basic position with your shoulders square to the net, racket up and your feet about shoulder width apart. Keep your weight on the balls of your feet so you can move quickly in any direction.

  2. Step 2

Move your left foot forward toward the net and across your body. Pivot on your left foot, pushing off to extend your right leg out diagonally toward the shuttlecock in a lunging motion that transfers most of your weight to your right foot. This quick two-step should get you up into the forecourt and into position for the shot.

  3. Step 3

Extend your upper body toward the shuttlecock so your torso is over your right knee. Both heels should be off the floor as you lean into the shot.

  4. Step 4

Turn the racket head almost horizontal to the floor, as if you're serving drinks on it, and keep it up at eye level with your arm fully extended. Drop the leading edge of the racket head slightly to aim the shuttlecock back over the net.

  5. Step 5

Hit the shuttlecock with just an upward flick of the wrist. The object of this shot is to drop it lightly over the net into your opponent's forecourt, making him lunge for it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're a left-handed player, reverse right and left in each step.
