How to Prepare for Landscaping Your Backyard

Preparing to landscape your backyard takes time and thought. You have fit what you want and what you need into your plan. You need to allow for the size of your yard also, a small yard will not necessarily fit everything you would like it to. A large yard may look bare with only small plants and without a large feature item.

Instructions

1. Examine your backyard from inside your home. Look out all the windows and doors that face your backyard, noting the things you like as well as those you want changed.

2. Move to your patio or deck, and make the same notes. Go through your entire yard from all different angles, repeating this process.

3. Consider the things you want changed. You can add bushes or fencing to block traffic and for privacy. Add light to illuminate features you enjoy. Think about what you do in your yard. Your quiet places to read and enjoy being outside will dramatically differ from a yard that is full of pets and children.

4. Make detailed notes and carefully plan all the changes. Think about how the yard will look once you have finished it. You may need more plants to fill empty areas, and an area that looks to full may need smaller plants or less outdoor furniture.

• Drawing your plan out on paper can help you determine if anything is missing, or needs addressed. There are computer programs that will help you with this if you are not confident in your art skills.
