How to Wax a Back

Excessive hair growth on the back can be uncomfortable and unsightly, especially when summer tank-top season rolls around. Removing the hair by waxing it can be slightly painful, but many people think the aesthetic appearance of a smooth back is worth it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Wash the back thoroughly with warm water and mild soap, making sure that any grime and sweat is totally removed, or the wax might not adhere to the hair. Dry the skin thoroughly.
Step2
Trim the hairs on the back with a beard trimmer or hair clipper but don't trim them too drastically, because the hairs must be at least 1/8 inch for the wax to work. If they are more than 3/4 inch long, they can be very painful.
Step3
Prepare the wax according to the directions on the package.
Step4
Apply the prepared wax to a small patch of skin before you begin, to make sure there is no allergic reaction. If no problems appear, coat the back with an even layer of wax, spreading it in the direction that the hair grows.
Step5
Lay the paper or linen strips quickly on top of the wax, and press them down firmly three times with your palms. Pull the strips off in one fast motion, and repeat until all of the strips have been removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • After waxing, apply a layer of good moisturizer to sooth and heal irritated skin.
  • Wear a soft cotton t-shirt for a few days and avoid rough or scratchy fabric until the irritation clears. If possible, go shirtless for the first few hours.
