    Planning and Packing Meals

  1. Step 1

Know exactly how long you will be gone so that you can decide how much food you need for the whole trip. Decide how much you will eat each day.

  2. Step 2

Divide your meal plan into four categories: breakfast, lunch, supper and snacks. Using these categories will help you pick the right foods and the correct amounts.

  3. Step 3

Write a list of food items that you can take for each category. Make sure that you take enough for each day plus a little extra in case any food is lost or goes bad.

  4. Step 4

Measure out your breakfast items and put them in baggies if you plan to eat cereal, granola or dried fruit. Choose dry goods that will last and that have little cleanup.

  5. Step 5

Take vacuum-packed food, squeeze tubes, water bottles and backpack meals for ease of use. You won't have to worry about complicated preparation if you take items that are ready for use.

  6. Step 6

Bring matches, pots, a light portable stove, water pills, utensils and baggies.

  7. Preparing Meals

  8. Step 1

Prepare as many breakfast items ahead as possible by putting items in sealed baggies that you can grab from your backpack when you are hungry.

  9. Step 2

Make sure you can open your cans and heat your food.

  10. Step 3

Buy backpack meals that come in vacuum-packed packages. You just need to heat them in water.

  11. Step 4

Cook your food on a stove in a pot or on the grill.
