How to Cut Fabric for a Baby Quilt

Once you have found the perfect pattern for your baby quilt, it's time to prepare your material for quilting. You will need to measure, cut and assemble the quilt before you begin. Follow these tips to cut fabric for a baby quilt.

Things You'll Need:

  • Material
  • Mat
  • Cutting tool
  • Ruler
  1. Step 1

    Measure the pieces for the middle, the inside and the edges before you begin. You will need accurate measurements before you begin cutting the fabric.

  2. Step 2

    Use a cutting tool or a cutting wheel to cut the pieces cleanly and a cutting or quilting mat to place them on.

  3. Step 3

    Place the center piece of fabric on the cutting mat, lining the outer left edge with a line on the mat. Fold the center piece upward so that it is in half.

  4. Step 4

    Hold the ruler against the edge of the fabric making sure the line is straight. Cut the outer edge of the fabric against the ruler to make a perfectly even cut side.

  5. Step 5

    Cut the right side straight along the ruler making another perfectly even side.

  6. Step 6

    Find the inside pieces next and cut them into smaller pieces also using the quilting mat and the cutting tool. Put them aside after they are cut.

  7. Step 7

    Cut the border pieces last. Fold each smaller piece of fabric in half. Straighten the edges along the ruler and cut the border pieces to the correct size.

  • Make sure your cutting tool is sharp so that your edges come away clean.
  • Gather your equipment before you begin. You need the material, a mat, a cutting tool and a ruler.
  • Make sure you measure before you cut or your pattern may not turn out.
