Strengthen Hips and Knees

Exercising the knee and hip provides your muscles with the strength they need to work properly and minimizes the debilitating effects of arthritis. By doing these exercises daily, you'll increase your mobility and reduce pain.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold on to the back of a strong, sturdy chair with both feet on the ground. You can also use a counter top or a sturdy table for this exercise. Life one foot off of the ground and balance on the other as long as you comfortably can. Repeat this exercise with the opposite foot.

    • 2

Start off as in Step 1, but steady yourself using one hand. As your strength increases, try for no support at all.

    • 3

Lie on your back but support your upper body with your elbows. Place one leg flat on the floor in front of you and bend the other at the knee. Lift the flat leg straight into the air and hold it as high as you can for 3 to 5 seconds.

    • 4

Switch leg positions and do the same exercise on the other leg. Continue to lift the leg higher as your range of motion improves and your strength increases. By keeping in shape, you can counteract many of the harmful effects of arthritis.
