After one is finished with a welding job, it is very important that the work area is cleaned. Not only will this provide a clean work area, it will also show the welder if the job was welded correctly or not. Here are a few steps to follow for effective clean up after welding.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean off the slag coating of the object that was welded when completed. This is the coating that covers your weld. This is normally seen with arc welding. Use a chipping hammer to hit the slag. If the slag comes off easily, then the weld is good. If the slag does not come off easily, the weld is probably not good and you may need to practice a little more.

  2. Step 2

Brush away the slag chippings with a wire brush. Wipe them into a trash can. Do not wipe with a towel or your hand because they will be sharp. Make sure you tap the brush on the side of the trash can to release and remove any pieces of slag that may be inside the bristles of the brush.

  3. Step 3

Inspect your weld. You may need to continue welding. If this is the case, follow the same steps when cleaning the weld. Always make sure you perform these steps each time you weld.

  4. Step 4

Organize and clean the work area. Make sure all tools are put away and the entire area is clean and free of pieces. Having a clean work area when you weld will assure proper welding and will also guarantee a safe working environment. Safety should always be a top priority when welding.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear the proper safety equipment when welding such as goggles, gloves, and other protective clothing.
