Step 1
Practice estimating distance in different areas and under different light conditions. The ability to accurately gage distance is one of the field archer's most valuable skills.
-
Step 2
Familiarize yourself with shooting your bow intuitively. This involves looking along the length of your drawn arrow rather than on your fixed sight.
-
Step 3
Shoot your bow in varying wind conditions and from varying directions. Compensating for cross wind on a field archery range will take time, but the skill is an important one.
-
Step 4
Shoot from an elevated position if you plan to bow hunt from a tree stand. Shooting from an acclivity tends to make you overshoot the target, so you should adjust your field range accordingly.
-
Step 5
Shoot at moving targets if any are available on the field archery range. You must develop an understanding of how far you may need to lead your targets.
-
Step 6
Practice quick draw shots. This requires that you move through the range and have targets presented randomly to you in a kind of "Hogan's Alley" scenario.
