Step 1
Anchor the draw. You should be able to feel the string against the side of your face. There is considerable variation on the exact location, but the anchor should be done firmly and to the same point each time to ensure consistency with your shots.
-
Step 2
Focus on the target while keeping the string in the center of the bow. Look down the sight ring if you have one; otherwise sight all the way down the length of the arrow to the point.
-
Step 3
Continue drawing the bow back slowly and release all of the tension in your fingers at the same time to eliminate multiple points of release. Continue to focus on the target and keep your bow arm extended.
-
Step 4
Follow through by drawing past your neck with your fingers still relaxed until your hand comes to rest near your shoulder. Hold this position until the arrow hits the target.
-
Step 5
Use a mechanical release aid. These usually allow the archer to release the arrow by pulling a trigger, although some models release automatically once the draw reaches a pre-determined weight. The primary advantage of this is to have a single point of contact on the string rather than 3 fingers in order to minimize string deformity and provide a more consistent release.
