Several different methods of holding the string during archery exist, and the best method is dependent upon the type of bow, shooting position and personal preference. The following steps will show how to use a 3-finger arrow release in archery.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the first 3 fingers of your dominant hand around the string below the nocking point. This is the 3-finger under method and is primarily used with longbows that require the high strength of this grip.

  2. Step 2

Choose the point on the string where you will nock the arrow for the 3-finger under grip. The arrow usually will be nocked between dead center and a 1/2-inch above dead center.

  3. Step 3

Draw the string back so that it is next to your nose with your fingers along your chin. If you are shooting without a sight (bare bow), as is frequently the case with the 3-finger under grip, you will aim down the arrow to the point.

  4. Step 4

Put the index finger above the nock with the second and third fingers below the nock. This method is called the split-fingered or Mediterranean draw and is by far the most popular method of drawing a bow.

  5. Step 5

Select the right finger tab for a 3-fingered grip. The tab for a 3-finger under grip is a single patch because all of the fingers are below the arrow whereas the Mediterranean draw requires a tab with a split down the leading edge to accommodate the string.
