How to Use Sights and Scopes on a Bow

As you learn the basics of archery, you need to understand the different parts of the bow and how to use each part. Most archers will use a compound bow which has a sight. The sights of a bow are used to focus on a target prior to shooting.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the type of sight on your bow. Two traditional sights are utilized on a compound bow: a pin sight and a scope. For most beginners, a pin sight can prove helpful.

    • 2

Figure out the yardage by the pins on the pin sight. On most bows, the pins are different colors. Each pin color reflects the yardage of how far away your target is away from you. You should commit the pin colors and corresponding yardage to memory.

    • 3

Move the pin sight up and down. You can adjust the pin sight to your comfort level. You may need to shoot a couple of times until you find the correct position.

    • 4

Upgrade to a scope after you master the pin sight. Many archers find that they achieve better results with the scope. With the scope, you look for a target through a clear lens.

    • 5

Navigate the scope in any direction. You have more freedom to move around a scope. Adjust it left, right, up or down until you are comfortable with the position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you shoot, you should learn how to take the sight on and off of your bow.
