How to Create a Background and Outline an Airbrush Design

When learning how to airbrush it's best to start with airbrush-ready paints or food coloring. You will master the skill easier using paints that aren't a hassle to work with. After you get good at airbrushing you can experiment with craft, textile and hobby paints, which also work well for airbrushing but are harder to use.

Step 1

Form a mental picture of what you intend to airbrush or look at an actual picture while creating your design. When you are new at airbrushing it is easier if you have a picture of the design to look at while you are working. If you do not have a picture you might want to sketch the design onto a piece of paper before beginning to paint.
Step 2

Choose the color for your background. Use the color to sketch your design onto your shirt or whatever other material that you are airbrushing.
Step 3

Fill your background in with color. Go over the design that you sketched. Use a back-and-forth, horizontal method when applying the background paint. As long as you keep your movement in the same horizontal position you will still be able to see your design through the background even though the paint is the same color.
Step 4

Pick a different color to outline your design. When outlining, use crisp, sharp thin lines of paint.
