Aikido is a form of martial arts that teaches students discipline as well as self-defense techniques. The techniques used in Aikido can be performed by anyone. The Uchi-Dai Yonkyo is used to ward off an attacker who grabs you from the front.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clear the area for practice and lay out your floor mats evenly. A partner is needed to practice this technique effectively.

  2. Step 2

Stand facing your opponent. Ask the opponent to step toward you with one arm raised as though he is going to grab the collar or shoulder of your shirt.

  3. Step 3

Step into the attack. Place one hand on the attacker's elbow and the other hand on his wrist. Lift his arm above your head.

  4. Step 4

Bend the attacker's arm down and around his back. Step into the turn of his arm. You are now standing sideways behind him. This forces him to bend at the waist.

  5. Step 5

Turn and pull your opponent around until he is at your side. Let him rise to his feet. Continue to hold his wrist and arm.

  6. Step 6

Move your hand from the opponent's elbow to just above his hand. Step in behind the attacker while slightly bending your knees.

  7. Step 7

Step backward and turn behind your opponent. Twist him around again to force him to the ground. Stand beside him and hold one of his arms. Bend the opponent's arm back until he yields.
