Aikido techniques are designed to defend instead of attack. The Taino Tenkan move in Aikido teaches the martial artist to enter a situation while moving back and to redirect the power of the attacker. This Aikido technique defends against someone grabbing your wrist or hand.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean the practicing area. Remove any obstacles. Learning the Taino Tenkan does not require floor mats, but mats do soften the fall when you hit the ground.

  2. Step 2

Get into position with your partner. His left foot should point toward you. Your right foot should point toward your partner.

  3. Step 3

Ask your partner to grab your right wrist with his left hand. This is your hand closest to the attacker.

  4. Step 4

Step back at an angle to position yourself beside the opponent. You are now just to the side and behind the opponent. This closes the gap between you.

  5. Step 5

Pull the attacker's arm forward with a swift jerk. This motion pulls him closer to you and redirects the power to his arm.

  6. Step 6

Turn backward and away from the attacker's arm. This places your back against his. Continue to turn in this direction, pulling your arm as you go. This forces the attacker to let go or get pulled off his feet to the floor. This completes the Taino Tenkan.
