Developed in the 1930s, Aikido is a martial art that focuses on self-defense. Considered a nonaggressive martial art, it utilizes the opponent's weight and force against him to neutralize the attack. All students of the discipline should learn the Aikido Spinning Head Throw.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Move to the outside line as your opponent begins to attack. In Aikido, the "line" is the straight path between you and your opponent. As your opponent attacks, move to the outside of that line. This will be whichever side is exposing more of your opponent's back.

  2. Step 2

Chop down on your opponent's wrist with one hand, while reaching for the back of his neck with the other hand. This will cause him to lose his balance as his weight shifts off its natural center of gravity.

  3. Step 3

Reverse your motion as the opponent begins to rise out of the grip. Your opponent will think you have relinquished control when he realizes he hasn't hit the floor. As he steadies himself, with your hands still on his wrist and neck, reverse your movement. Remove your hand from his wrist and place it on the front of his neck. Remove the hand that was on the back of his neck and use it as a pivot point against your opponent's back.

  4. Step 4

Spin your opponent around in a corkscrew. As you reverse your motion, force your opponent to do the same. While you are taking small steps, his feet will try to make a large circle and he will be off-balance.

  5. Step 5

Throw your opponent to the ground to complete the Aikido Spinning Head Throw. By simply thrusting your arms at the end of the move, your opponent will hit the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice the Aikido Spinning Head Throw at half speed until you feel you have mastered it. This will allow you to focus on each step without accidentally injuring yourself or your practice partner.
  • When performing any Aikido move, including the Spinning Head Throw, make sure you have proper padding on the ground. Workout mats are ideal.
