The martial arts style called Aikido was originally created in the Japanese style of Jujitsu. Aikido is a soft form of martial arts use primarily for self defense. The Irimi is an Aikido move to help avoid attacks from an approaching opponent.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask your partner to advance toward you as though he is about to attack. Face your partner as he advances. Let him get 2 or 3 feet in front of you before beginning the Irimi technique.

  2. Step 2

Move into a guard position. Leave your hands at your side so you do not appear threatening to the attacker.

  3. Step 3

Slide your front foot to the side until it is parallel with the attacker's front foot. This places you diagonally away from the attacker's striking range.

  4. Step 4

Step back with your back leg. Place your back leg firmly on the ground. When it is even with your front leg, you have a strong foundation to attack.

  5. Step 5

Raise your arms into the attack or defensive position to avoid your opponent's attack. This readies you for a quick movement from your attacker.

  6. Step 6

Practice this move with a partner to perfect your Irimi technique. If done properly, this move helps you avoid a major altercation with an attacker.

Tips & Warnings
  • To effectively practice Aikido, a partner is needed to play the attacker.
