Once you have begun learning the Japanese marital art of Aikido, it is time to try a defensive move called shomen uchi-dai ikkyo. As always, the concept behind Aikido lies in the ability to defend oneself but at the same time avoid direct conflict. Use the tips below to try this beginning-level defense technique when an attacker approaches with an arm up.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Move quickly toward the attacker before he can come toward you. It always helps to have the element of surprise in your favor. The most important aspect of this move is that you spring upon the attacker quickly before he can bring his arm down.

  2. Step 2

Bring your body close to the attacker's. Keep your shoulders straight and squared against his.

  3. Step 3

Grab onto his arm with both hands firmly, while it is in its highest point in preparation of strike. Place your hand that is opposite his raised arm firmly around his wrist. Place your other hand right above his elbow.

  4. Step 4

Push the arm down with both hands. Bring his head and shoulder down and forward. Keep your grip on his wrist tight, and straighten his arm at the elbow by applying pressure to the elbow.

  5. Step 5

Twist the arm while pushing it down, so that the elbow is facing up in the final position.

  6. Step 6

Maintain your advantage over the attacker by keeping your feet firmly grounded and keeping him off-balance by keeping his elbow straight and his back bent over.

  7. Step 7

Incapacitate your opponent by bending his hand forward to maintain the hold on his arm.
