Aikido martial arts is a nonaggressive style of martial arts that focuses on defense. The Aikido style of fighting is a combination of restraints, locks and throws that overcome opponents with their own force.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask your partner to grab your wrist as an attacker might try to grab you. The Kokyu Ho is designed to free you from this type of grab.

  2. Step 2

Cross your outside leg in front of you and the attacker. This places you side by side with your attacker with just your leg in front.

  3. Step 3

Pull your restrained arm in front of you and your opponent. This closes the gap between you both.

  4. Step 4

Raise the same arm upward. Bend your elbow and push back with a swift motion, elbowing the attacker in the face.

  5. Step 5

Step in toward the elbow when the elbow is thrust backward. This adds more force to the blow and pushes the attacker off balance.

  6. Step 6

Practice this move slowly at first and work toward a fast speed. The faster this move is performed, the greater your advantage over the attacker.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only use this move on an actual attacker when it is perfected. If the Kokyu Ho is done too slowly, it gives time for the attacker to move or to counter the Kokyu Ho.
