How to Do an Aikido Elbow Throw

A classic aikido throw is the Hiji Garuma, which translates literally from the Japanese as "elbow wheel." In this throw, you grab your opponent's elbow as he approaches and use his body weight to send him spinning to the ground.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step to the side as your opponent moves towards you, timing your step so you move out of his path when he's nearly within arm's length of you.

  2. Step 2

Grab the top of his wrist with whichever hand is furthest from your attacker. Put your other hand underneath the back of his elbow on the hinge.

  3. Step 3

Push down with your hand holding the wrist and push up with your hand holding the elbow, straightening his arm and giving yourself more leverage.

  4. Step 4

Spin him to the ground by turning him in a circle while maintaining your hold on his arm.

  5. Step 5

Let go of his elbow as he falls to the ground, or you may fall on top of him.

  6. Step 6

Practice the elbow throw in slow motion before taking it up to actual speed. As you practice, focus on correct form to prevent injury to you or your opponent. If you have problems with form, return to slow motion practice before attempting to do the throw at actual speed again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice the elbow throw from both directions to ensure that you can use it no matter what direction a potential attack comes from.
  • Practice this throw with someone experienced in aikido, or under the supervision of an aikido instructor. Incorrect form can injure you or your partner.
