Rugby is a rough and tumble sport that to a non-fan can be hard to decipher. At its core, rugby is actually a simple game that has some basic tactics. Using the up and under kick is one of these basic tactics.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pay attention to the position of the chasing players before the kick. As the object of the up and under kick is to come to earth just as the chasing players are arriving at the kick's end point.

  2. Step 2

Grasp the ball and angle it slightly upward. The angle will vary depending on the position of the other players on the rugby pitch. Remember the object of the up and under kick is to get the ball to the chasing players as close to optimal scoring position as possible.

  3. Step 3

Drop the ball down and at the same time bring the kicking foot up. Also, be sure to plant the non-kicking leg firmly on the ground when the ball drops. Finally, make certain to bend the non-kicking leg slightly at the time of the kick.

  4. Step 4

Make contact with the ball about midway off the ground. The point of contact will vary depending on the distance needed for the up and under kick.

  5. Step 5

Extend the kicking foot through the kick and keep the head down. This will improve the accuracy of the up and under kick.

  6. Step 6

Practice the kick as much as possible with visualized targets on the field. The up and under kick can be difficult to execute if the player does not practice the kick before a match.
