How to Kick for Touch in Rugby

In rugby, the touch line separates the touch (out of bounds) from the pitch (playing field). A rugby kick for touch is the close equivalent of an out-of bounds punt in American football. It is used to move play towards the other team's goal. It's considered a strong defensive move.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn to kick with accuracy as well as power. Only if you kick from behind your 22 meter line can a kick go straight to touch. Otherwise it must bounce once.

    • 2

Be willing to pay the penalty if your kick goes straight through from the other side of the 22. Then the ball comes back to where it was kicked.

    • 3

Use a straightforward punt if you're on the other side of the 22. It stands a greater chance of bouncing straight and then finding touch.

    • 4

Utilize a screw ball if you're behind your 22. Kick a screw ball by using the outside of your foot and angling your kicking leg from outside in, placing a spiral spin on the ball. This spin significantly increases a kick's distance.

    • 5

Work for accuracy even on screw balls. It's better to sacrifice a few meters distance than to instead find the ball coming right back at you. Make sure the kick finds touch.
