How to Do a Spinning Back Kick in Shorin-ryu Karate

The spinning back kick is one of the most difficult techniques to master. It requires an accurate assessment of the distance to your target and the ability to maintain your balance during and after deployment.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin in the ready stance with your right foot in back and your guard up.

    • 2

Turn to the right until your back is facing your opponent. Look over your right shoulder, making sure your opponent is still within range.

    • 3

Lift your right knee to your chest, then kick backward, making contact with your opponent with your right heel.

    • 4

Continue turning to the right, pulling your right knee back to your chest, until you are again facing your opponent. Return to the ready stance with your right foot in front and change your guard.

Tips & Warnings

  • A properly executed spinning back kick can cause your opponent to fly backward several feet. It is a fight-ending technique.

  • Good targets are the solar plexus, hip joint and the rib cage under your opponent's armpit. Advanced students might aim for their opponent's head or knee.

  • Use this technique only if you're certain you can afford to turn your back to your opponent because you will be vulnerable for a moment. A quick-thinking opponent can exploit that vulnerability.

  • Practice the spinning back kick alone and against a heavy bag until you've mastered it. Losing your balance during the technique leaves you open to a counterattack.
