In fencing, you can win or lose points just because of your footwork. You must be able to advance and retreat in a methodical manner to gain points. The balestra and quartata will be helpful tools for any fencer to learn.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

    Balestra

  1. Step 1

Take a fencing stance which requires you to stand with one foot forward and the other back. The distance should be about shoulder-width. Begin the balestra by moving your front foot forward.

  2. Step 2

Advance your back foot as well, keeping it shoulder-width apart from the front foot.

  3. Step 3

Move both feet at the same moment so that you are almost hopping forward in the fencer's stance.

  4. Step 4

From the balestra, extend forward in a lunge to make your attack. The balestra allows you to advance forward quickly over a long distance.

  5. Quartata

  6. Step 1

Stand in a fencer's stance. Turn your body in the opposite direction of your opponent as he attacks.

  7. Step 2

Step back with your back foot and to the side as your opponent lunges forward.

  8. Step 3

End the quartata with your body turned sideways to your opponent and your feet shoulder-width apart. Your back heel still faces the opponent.

  9. Step 4

Bring your torso forward so that you can dodge your opponent's blade.

  10. Step 5

Be aware of the back foot's placement when you do the quartata. Make sure that when you end the move, your back foot is still within the bounds of the fencing floor. If it is outside the line, you could receive a penalty.

  11. Step 6

Take away your opponent's point by performing the quartata properly. Your opponent is trying to gain a point by hitting you. When you perform the quartata and evade his point, your opponent loses that point.
