If you coach a cheerleading team, you should teach individual stunting techniques to various members of the team. These stunts are used to show off the extraordinary skills of the flier and teach the team how to work together to achieve an individual stunt.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice stunts on a matted surface. During competitions, you won't have this luxury, but beginners will appreciate the mats.

  2. Step 2

Work with the team to decide who will perform the stunts. Many times, smaller individuals with gymnastics experience are good candidates. Ask the team for volunteers.

  3. Step 3

Separate the cheerleaders into stunting teams. Each stunting group consists of four spotters and one flier. The flier stands in the middle of the four other team members.

  4. Step 4

Count off each stunt as it's performed. Both the flier and other team members should learn to use your count as a way to time the sequence of the stunt. Many coaches use a 5 or 10 count.

  5. Step 5

Start with some of the most basic individual stunts. Many squads first learn how to perform extensions and basket tosses. During practices you can usually determine how ready the team is to try more advanced stunts.

Tips & Warnings
  • If one of the cheerleaders is unsure about a stunt, skip it for now. Wait until all team members are ready to learn it and then try again.
  • Once the team learns the stunt, you can decide which cheerleader will do the counting during competition.
