Step 1
Select the style of belly dancing you want to learn. There are various types of belly dancing. Each style is a bit different using different music, costumes and tempo. Types of dancing include tribal, classic Egyptian and cabaret.

Find a class. Contact your local parks and recreation department which may hold dance classes. Call local dance studios in your area. Check out ethnic clubs or cultural centers. Keep in mind not all classes are called belly dancing. Some community centers and dance studio may call belly dance class's Arabic dance or Middle Eastern dance.

Step 3
Stretch your stomach, hips and back before starting to belly dance. You may be moving muscles in a new way. Stretching may help reduce injury and soreness.

Dress the part. It's hard to feel like you're a belly dancer in jeans and a sweatshirt. Wear a traditional belly dance costume including a midriff blouse, a hip belt and pantaloons.

Learn the basics. Belly dancing is made up of several main dance moves. One of the first moves you should learn is the belly roll. Concentrate on rolling your stomach without moving your chest.

Step 6
Add additional moves. Practice other belly dancing moves, such as hip circles, back shimmys and backbends. Master the basic moves before moving on to advanced dance moves and combinations.

Read Zaghareet Magazine, a publication focusing on belly dancing. Tips for finding a teacher, learning dance moves and making costumes are in the magazine.
