Temporal Mandible Joint, or TMJ is not a condition; it is the name of our jaw joint. Symptoms of TMJ disorder include pain in the jaw and surrounding area, limited ability to open your mouth and snapping noises when you move your jaw. Studies have found that many TMJ sufferers can get relief through acupuncture and acupressure.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit an acupuncturist to have them use needles to treat your TMJ symptoms. You should never do acupuncture on yourself at home unless you have been taught how to do it correctly.

  2. Step 2

Seek an acupuncturist who believes in self treatment. Some acupuncturists will teach their patients how to give themselves treatments at home and will supply you with sterilized needles to use in your treatment.

  3. Step 3

Perform acupressure at home to get relief of TMJ symptoms. Acupressure is safer to perform even if you are not properly trained because you apply pressure to the acupuncture spots instead of breaking the skin with needle insertion.

  4. Step 4

Locate the Hegu point which is used for TMJ treatment. The Hegu point is located on both of your hands between the thumb and the index finger.

  5. Step 5

Apply pressure to Hegu point if you are performing acupressure, insert needles into that same area if you are performing acupuncture. Patients report relief from TMJ symptoms almost immediately while needles are still in place or after they are removed.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Hegu acupuncture point is helpful for many types of pain associated with the head including headaches and toothaches.
