Everyone has a different tolerance level for acne breakouts. Some people seem oblivious to dozens of acne lesions, even when they obscure their best features. Others become emotional over a single tiny pimple. Knowing when to treat acne is a personal decision, but there are some factors to take into consideration.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Treat your acne if it embarrasses you. Some mild blemishes are a common malady everyone must deal with at times. However, if your acne keeps you from participating in your normal activities because you're embarrassed, you must seek treatment.

  2. Step 2

Apply emergency treatments to acne breakouts before a special occasion. If you experience only the occasional breakout, you don't need to crush an ant with a sledgehammer. Learn about quick-fix techniques to calm a temporary flareup.

  3. Step 3

Heal acne lesions before they permanently damage your skin. If you have cystic acne, marked by hard nodules under the top layer of the skin, you're at risk for scarring.

  4. Step 4

Take care of acne so it doesn't enlarge your pores. Blackheads can enlarge the architecture of your pores and acne draws attention to pore size in general.

  5. Step 5

Administer acne treatments that don't make the skin look worse than the acne does. If you exaggerate your condition to the dermatologist, you may go home with a treatment designed for someone with a more serious case of acne. Over treating acne can cause peeling and redness.
