Whether you're replacing an existing dishwasher or installing one in a new location, you must know at least the basics about wiring if you want it installed correctly.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consult the installation instructions that came with the dishwasher. This will give you specific wiring recommendations for your make and model of dishwasher, like specifications on where the electrical wire cable should enter the cabinet and possibly what wire nuts to use.

  2. Step 2

Have an electrician wire a new breaker box for your dishwasher, unless you already have a separate circuit for your dishwasher. Have him run a line to the dishwasher's location to be sure the electrical wire cable is installed properly.

  3. Step 3

Turn off the breaker to the new dishwasher's circuit. Use a voltmeter to check for current to reduce the risk of electric shock before proceeding with any wiring.

  4. Step 4

Pull the electrical wire cable through the back of the electrical box on the dishwasher and connect matching colors using wire nuts. Match black to black, white to white and green to copper, which is the ground.

  5. Step 5

Twist wire nuts firmly on wire ends and wrap connections with electrical tape if desired. Place the connections in the dishwasher's electrical box and screw on the lid.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turn off the breaker before touching any wires in the dishwasher. Also, be sure there is adequate lighting to do the job with the breaker turned off.
