When you live in a cold climate you are bound to find your wiper blades stuck to the window shield. Removing the blade quickly can break the wiper blade by tearing the rubber part that wipes the window away from the metal part of the blade. It pays, therefore, to know how remove a frozen wiper blade properly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brush away the snow and large pieces of frozen ice from your windshield with your hand or with a car brush. Check to see if the blades are frozen to the windshield when the initial snow and ice is gone.

  2. Step 2

Remove the ice from the blades by pressing down hard on the wiper bade with the palm of your hand.

  3. Step 3

Move your hand up and down against the wiper blade, pushing the blade up and down as you go. Do this a few times until the wiper blade feels loose.

  4. Step 4

Check the end of the wiper blade to ensure the tip is unstuck. Pull the wiper blade slightly to see if the blade comes free from the windshield.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the pressing down motion again if the blade is still stuck. Check the second windshield wiper and move your hand up and down against the second wiper to loosen it too.

  6. Step 6

Wiggle both blades to make sure they are completely unfrozen before turning on your wipers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turn on your car before you start so that it warms up. The heat from the car will melt some of the ice.
  • Buy a windshield wiper de-icer which is a plastic piece that fits over your windshield wipers to stop them from freezing to the windshield.
  • Don't pull the wiper blade up quickly or the rubber may come off.
