How to Install Car Inside Window Tint

Installing auto tinting protects your vehicle's interior from harmful UV damage and cools car so your air conditioner doesn't have to work so hard. Tint also acts as a theft deterrent by limiting in the visibility into your car.

Things You'll Need:

    Preparing the Window

  1. Step 1

    Mix 1 qt. water with 1/2 tsp. baby shampoo in a spray bottle. To avoid over sudsing, add the soap to the water and stir.

  2. Step 2

    Spray both the interior and exterior with the mixture and clean the glass with a paper towel.

  3. Step 3

    Scrape anything left on the glass carefully with a razor blade, but be careful not to scratch the window.

  4. Step 4

    Clean your window again using the soap mixture.

  5. Preparing the Tint

  6. Step 1

    Lay the butcher paper on the outside of the window and trace the window. When you apply the tint, it goes on the inside.

  7. Step 2

    Cut the tint using your butchers paper as a guide.

  8. Step 3

    Peel back the top half of the plastic backing from the tint. Spray the tint and the window with your soap mixture.

  9. Applying the Tint

  10. Step 1

    Line up the tint with the top of the window on the inside.

  11. Step 2

    Use a squeegee to smooth out a portion of the tint in the center of the window. Move out the water with the squeegee, but don't stretch the tint.

  12. Step 3

    Peel off the rest of the plastic backing.

  13. Step 4

    Continue smoothing out all bubbles and wrinkles with the squeegee, moving from the inside out.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're tinting a moving window, roll the window down a little and trace the top and sides.
  • Tinting laws vary by state; make sure you purchase tint that's legal for the state in which your vehicle is registered.
