When you want to break small pieces of tile for mosaic projects, a handheld tile cutter is the perfect tool. You also can use the handheld cutter to design a project with random, yet controlled size and shape tiles. The handheld cutter offers enough versatility and control for multiple tasks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tiles
  • Handheld tile cutter
  • Protective goggles or glasses
  1. Step 1

Decide the desired shapes for tile pieces being used in the mosaic project. Use a washable marker or pencil to draw the shapes on the tiles if you need a guide when scoring.

  2. Step 2

Score the tile using the handheld cutter by rolling the scoring end over the tile following the lines. Use a lot of pressure when scoring.

  3. Step 3

Place the tile cutter over the score mark making sure the cutter's edges are centered over the score mark. Listen for a scratching noise to indicate you're applying enough pressure to score the tile.

  4. Step 4

Squeeze the handle of the tile cutter until the tile snaps. Note the thinner the tiles the easier it is to score and break.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the process until you have enough tiles to make your mosaic project.

Tips & Warnings
  • Draw out your mosaic design beforehand as a template for your project.
  • If you try to squeeze and the tile does not break or breaks uneven, you may not have scored the tile using enough pressure.
  • A handheld tile cutter works best with small tiles or pieces of tiles.
  • Watch out for flying tile chunks or small shavings. Wear protective goggles or eyeglasses to prevent injuries.
