Putting a door on its hinges is a great do-it-yourself task, especially for beginners. Because the steps are simple, it doesn't take very long and the end result can be impressive and rewarding.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Set the hinge pins and a hammer somewhere within reach of the doorway so that once the door is propped onto the hinges, you can easily reach them. Keep one hand on the door as a safety precaution.

  2. Step 2

Hold the door with one hand by the doorknob area and use the other hand to hold the opposite, flat edge of the door.

  3. Step 3

Prop the door on the heel point of the hinge side so you can easily pivot the door and get your toe underneath it. Scoot the door into the door jamb.

  4. Step 4

Lift the door onto the top hinge. Avoid pinching your fingers on the hinge side. Keep your toe underneath the door until you can move it into place. Adjust the bottom hinges into place.

  5. Step 5

Keep one hand on the door and retrieve the pins and hammer. Slip the top pin part way into the hinge. Slip the bottom pin in next. Use your hammer to tap them fully into the hinge. Use caution not to knock out the bottom pin of each hinge when you hammer in the top pin.

  6. Step 6

Tap the hinges into place with your hammer if they don't fit perfectly at first.
