Make your child's household band complete with a tom-tom drum without. Supplies in the pantry are all that's needed for this drum and the children can help you with this two-person project.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Gather and prepare the supplies for the body of the tom-tom drum. Get a sturdy empty cardboard cylinder container. Punch out either end and the cylinder looks like a tunnel. Glue construction paper to cover the outside of the cylinder.
Step2
Decorate the outside of the cylinder. Color with markers. Embellish with stickers. Use imagination with the art supplies and design.
Step3
Cut two deflated rubber balloons. Trim off the entire narrow end of the balloon. The end product looks similar to a bathing cap.
Step4
Stretch one balloon over the top of the cylinder and have another person secure it by placing a rubber band around the balloon over the drum. Repeat with the other balloon on the bottom of the cylinder.
Step5
Play the tom tom drum. Hit either end of the drum with the eraser side of a pencil. The pitch of the beat depends on the tightness of the rubber balloon that's stretched.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider adding feathers, beads, string or paint when decorating the outside of the tom-tom drum.
