Step 1
Use motocross tire irons. Designed to fit just inside the rim and pop the rubber part of your tire out without tearing up the tube, these irons reduce damage to your tire and rim. If the tube has only a little hole, you can patch it later.
-
Step 2
Brace the tire horizontally or recruit a friend to hold it steady while you pry with the tire irons. It helps to have something underneath the spokes to set it on so the rubber tire will push downwards while the rim stays elevated. A heavy wooden block works well.
-
Step 3
Remove the old tube with your fingers once you've loosened the rubber tire seal and the tire is loose.
-
Step 4
Insert the new tube, making sure to align the valve stem with the rim hole and feeding it through.
-
Step 5
Add a little bit of air, just enough so the tube holds its shape inside the tire.
-
Step 6
Wedge the rubber rim of the tire back under the metal rim. You can use the tire irons but be careful not to pinch the new tube.
-
Step 7
Inflate your tire with the new tube.
