How to Shape Tile for Mosaics Using Handheld Tile Nippers

Mosaic projects are a great way to use up old or odd shaped tiles. Figuring out a way to use the variety sized pieces could be a challenge. Use a tile nippers to shape the pieces you want for your project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tile nipper
  • Tile
  • Protective glasses
  1. Step 1

    Cut small areas one at a time. Even if you want to cut 1 to 2 inches off an area of the tile, work in small "nips" to get your desired shape. The nippers works best when cutting in about 1/8 inch of the tile.

  2. Step 2

    Hold your nippers firmly in one hand, grasping the end of the handles. Tightly grip the tile in your other hand.

  3. Step 3

    Open the nippers, and get it in position on the tile about 1/8 inch from the edge. Squeeze the handles tightly together until the piece of tile snaps off.

  4. Step 4

    Use a piece of heavy sand paper to smooth the cut edges of the tile. Continue the process until you achieve the desired shape.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a wheeled nippers to use for triangle or long slender shaped mosaic tile pieces, or find a chipper nipper to make round pieces of tile.
  • Use a marker, pencil or utility knife to score the design you want on the tile before starting. This gives a pattern to follow when the exact size is necessary.
  • Always wear protective eyewear when nipping tiles.
