Step 1
Fill holes and cracks in the laminate with wood putty. Apply the wood putty according to directions, and use more than one application if the crack still shows or if the hole appears depressed. Allow the wood putty to cure according to directions. The surface of the laminate needs to be uniform before you set the tile so the tile will be level.

Step 2
Sand the entire surface of the laminate with a small palm sander. Sanding the surface of the laminate helps to rough it up and give it "teeth" so the thinset or adhesive can grip the countertop. Sand lightly so you don't gouge the surface of the laminate, just rough it slightly. You probably need to go over it twice for the desired effect. Wear a dust mask while you are sanding to protect your lungs and remember to clean the air filters in your home when you're done, so the laminate dust doesn't spread throughout the house.

Step 3
Wipe down the surface of the laminate after you've finished sanding. You can use a sponge that's been dampened with water; solvents aren't necessary and could interfere with the adhesive properties of the thinset when setting tile. Make sure the laminate surface is thoroughly dry before applying the thinset or adhesive for the tile.
