The headset of a bicycle is the part between the bicycle frame and fork that allows the steering wheel to rotate. A loose headset impedes safety while steering. Tightening a threadless headset is a simple process. Use caution when tightening the headset so as not to strip any of the hardware pieces.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Apply the front brake of the bicycle and wiggle the bike forward and backward. Listen for a clicking sound, an indicator of a loose headset.

  2. Step 2

Locate the nuts on either side of the bicycle headset. Look under brake cables and reflectors if the nuts are not visible. Determine the correct size of Allen wrench you need.

  3. Step 3

Loosen the nuts. Make a few turns on the first nut, and then make a few turns on the second. Alternate loosening the nuts until they are both free. Do not loosen them one at a time or damage to the bearings can occur.

  4. Step 4

Determine the size of Allen wrench to use on the head bolt. Completely loosen the head bolt that is located on the top of the bicycle headset.

  5. Step 5

Clean any corrosion off of the head bolt. Lube the head bolt with an all purpose grease.

  6. Step 6

Replace the head bolt into the headset. Hand tighten the headset until it is firmly set. Do not overtighten the head bolt or it can strip.

  7. Step 7

Restore the nuts on either side of the headset. Hand tighten the nuts in the same manner as they were removed, alternating between sides until they are completely tight.
