Tightening the wheel cassette on a bicycle can take care of gear shifting problems and strange noises from the gear cassette. The procedure requires only a few inexpensive tools.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Chain whip
  • Cassette lockring remover
  1. Step 1

Remove the back wheel by unlocking the cam lever or unscrewing the nut on the back wheel. Make a note of what gear the bike is in. Clear the chain from the cassette and lower the wheel away from the bike.

  2. Step 2

Remove any buildup of grease or dirt from the space between the sprockets and from the grooves of the lockring with a damp cloth.

  3. Step 3

Insert your cassette removing tool into the grooved lockring of the cassette. Make sure the tool is firmly set into the cassette. Place your chainwhip on any one of the cassette's sprockets.

  4. Step 4

Place an adjustable wrench onto the top of the cassette removing tool while it's sitting in the lockring. To tighten the cassette, turn the wrench clockwise until it becomes difficult to tighten. Give the wrench a couple of quick jerks to make sure the cassette is tightly fastened to the wheel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Working with the wheel against your legs helps you tighten the wheel cassette if you don't have a proper bicycle repair workspace.
