How to Properly Tie a Necktie

Tying a necktie can seem awkward if you're doing so for the first time. But a pull here, a flip there, a knot and tug later and voila, you have yourself a perfectly tied tie. With a bit of practice you'll be a master in no time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the tie around your neck with the small end about ΒΌ of the length of the big end of the tie.

    • 2

Grasp the small end of the tie with one hand. Take your free hand and place the large end of the tie over the small side.

    • 3

Hold the cross section where the two ends of the tie meet, take the big end of the tie and wrap it around the cross section until it forms an opening.

    • 4

Widen the opening a bit so you can see that it is there. Take the big part of the tie and pull it under and up through the opening you made, then pull down through the front of the necktie.

    • 5

Take both ends of the tie. The small end of the tie should be behind the big end of the tie, and the big end of the necktie should be considerably longer than the small end.

    • 6

Grab the tie with one hand and push the knot that you've made up until it's tightened around your neck. The tie should now hang nicely down the front of your **** with the short end behind the long end of the tie.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't panic if, once you've adjusted the knot, the small end of the tie is hanging longer than the big end. This just means you didn't make the short end short enough when starting the tie in Step 1. Just start over, make the adjustment and you'll be fine.
