Step 1
Use cross ties if they are available. These provide the safest way to tie a horse because they immobilize the head somewhat and give double protection against breakage.
-
Step 2
Tie your horse to a strong, smooth object and check for anything nearby that could impale the horse if it should spook.
-
Step 3
Choose to tie horses at a height at least level with their heads. Tie higher rather than lower, so the animal can't get a leg over the tie rope.
-
Step 4
Loop the rope around the fence or other object and take up the slack. Tie close rather than loose, for the same reason as in Step 3. Your horse will not be able to exert as much force if it does pull back on a short tie than it can on a long one.
-
Step 5
Do a quick-release knot, which is not really a knot at all.
-
Step 6
Pass the rope around the rail or post, then encircle the lead with the tail of the rope. Double the remainder of the rope and pass the loop under where the rope goes around the rail. Pull it tight.
-
Step 7
Leave the tail of the tie rope sticking out where you can grab it quickly and give a tug to untie your horse.
