Step 1
Decide whether an opened or closed terrarium is needed. Use open terrariums for plants that need high humidity. Closed terrariums cannot provide high humidity, but they can retain it. The open terrarium will need to be watered more often than a closed terrarium, but will be less likely to contract diseases.
-
Step 2
Choose a theme for the terrarium, such as a desert, woodland or tropical. Purchase plants that will adapt to the location of the terrarium, whether it be in indirect sunlight or in a dark place. Never put terrariums in direct sunlight, which causes heat to build up and can hurt the plants.
-
Step 3
Select a terrarium with clear plastic or glass. Tinted glass will inhibit the growth of the plants. If buying a terrarium is out of the question, old fish bowls, jugs, glass jars or bottles can be used instead.
-
Step 4
Pick out a terrarium that will fit the needs of the plant. If the plant will grow tall, choose a terrarium that is large enough to accommodate it. If you're only going to be planting small variations, the terrarium may be smaller.
