How to Do a Backhand Volley in Tennis

When executed correctly, the backhand volley in tennis is an almost certain way of winning a point. Your close position to the net and the volley's ability to reverse the power of the ball as it approaches can make it a fast, precise hit.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Approach the net quickly. When you're in volley range, set up the volley by turning to your backhand stance. Turn your shoulder and hold your free hand out behind you along the axis of your shoulders. Take a step forward with your lead foot. Hold the racket slightly in front of your body with a backhand grip.

  2. Step 2

Take a short step forward to initiate the volley. As you step forward, punch rather than swing at the tennis ball with the racket so you maintain control. Derive power for the punch from a lateral and slightly downward movement of the shoulder. Keep your elbow and wrist strong and almost locked.

  3. Step 3

Follow through. End the volley with the racket pointing in the direction of the target. You generally should be aiming for the baseline, so that's where your racket should end up pointing after the follow through. As you progress, your follow through can slice downward to put some spin and extra power into the ball.

  4. Step 4

Return to your ready stance with your racket out in front of you, knees bent and ready to run. The most likely return shot is also a volley since you're already at the net. Get centered and at an advantageous position relative to the net to return another volley.
