Step 1
Watch out for jetties when surfing. If your surfboard starts to shift towards a jetty, steer away from it immediately. The jetty can become a trap and the rocks will become like razors if you get stuck in the water as the waves crash upon it.
-
Step 2
Note any large rocks in the water. If there are huge rocks only merely covered by water, you might not be able to see them. When you are surfing, keep your eyes out on the water just as you would on the ground as you are driving.
-
Step 3
Keep your eyes out for people. Stay aware of snorkelers, divers and regular swimmers. You can seriously injure someone if you ram them with your board.
-
Step 4
Look out for anything that is demobilized in the water such as boats, piers, rocks and other hard objects. Steer the other way if you see any of these objects and head to safe waters.
-
Step 5
Be careful with rip currents. When the ocean water comes up on the shore and keeps pounding down, it eventually makes a tunnel-like rip current that shoots back out to the ocean; it can carry you off with it.
