Planning a sprinkler design for your yard can be a simple task if you take time to do it right. There are many sprinkler systems on the market so find a sprinkler system you like, look at the variety of heads available and then begin to design your sprinkler layout.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find out what the water pressure is for your home. You can purchase a pressure gauge to measure the water pressure at your spigot or you can ask your water company for a reading at your meter. Most sprinkler systems operate best with water pressure between 30 and 40 psi.

  2. Step 2

Measure the water flow in gallons per minute (GPM). Eight GPM is the industry standard. Time how long it takes to fill a gallon bucket at your water spigot. Apply the formula 60/seconds to fill one gallon to determine your GPM.

  3. Step 3

Determine the sprinkler coverage. If the psi from your spigot is between 30 and 40 you should typically be able to cover a 20-foot diameter circle with each sprinkler head. Each sprinkler system is slightly different, so be sure you know the coverage for the sprinkler system you are looking to purchase.

  4. Step 4

Measure your lawn as precisely as possible. Draw the perimeter to scale on graph paper. Also draw on sidewalks, driveways and other areas you do not plan to water.

  5. Step 5

Cut circles to scale to represent the sprinkler system. Each circle should represent a 20-foot diameter circle or whatever diameter your prospective sprinkler system can deliver. As necessary cut the circles into halves or quarters to represent special sprinkler heads needed to get into corners.

  6. Step 6

Lay circles on the graphic layout of your yard. Overlap the circles slightly. Once you have a design that covers the entire yard, tape the circles in place. You can then purchase the necessary sprinkler heads to complete the lawn work.
